PYROsmart® waste

Waste bunker monitoring with infrared cameras and extinguishing systems

PYROsmart® waste detects critical temperature changes in waste bunkers. Surface temperatures become hot before a fire breaks out so infrared cameras, also known as thermal imaging cameras, enable potential fire hazards to be detected early. Hotspots become “visible” in the thermal imaging of a monitored area before any smoke or fumes are evident. This principle behind infrared temperature monitoring is vital for preventive fire protection in waste incineration plants and has now become standard practice.

The PYROsmart® early fire detection system is able to pinpoint hotspots by knowing the 3D spatial geometry of a monitored area. Specially adapted software then enables targeted, automatic cooling and/or precision extinguishing using connected fire-monitor extinguishers. This makes PYROsmart® waste an effective and reliable fire prevention system in waste bunkers.

Designed for use in waste bunkers:

  • All components are specially adapted to the harsh environment.
  • The pan/tilt system is capable of monitoring much larger areas than fixed IR cameras.
  • Compressed-air cleaning for clear visibility and precision measurements, even in dusty environments.
  • Integrated extinguishing software for operating multiple fire monitors.
  • Options for different dynamic extinguishing scenario settings.
  • VdS-approved (planning and installation according to VdS Guideline 3189).
  • Compact, low-maintenance, updateable and always extendable.

Industry solution: Waste incineration & thermal waste treatment

Clear infrared panoramic thermal imaging

Waste bunker monitoring for early fire detection. The thermal image reveals localized hotspots.

A seamless thermal image (abiroVision® software) shows the full monitored area. Guide lines highlight the three-dimensional spatial structure.

PYROsmart® waste scans waste bunkers to create a single seamless thermal image using our patented abiroVision® software. This “panoramic thermal image” displays and evaluates temperature distributions across the full monitored area.

The thermal image displayed on the screen is a full representation of the three-dimensional space: each measured temperature is assignable to an exact location within the space.

Undulations within the material piles, edges around the piles and fluctuating heights during the sorting process require careful planning of fire prevention measures. PYROsmart® waste is perfectly equipped to meet this challenge. The intelligent fire prevention system ensures continuous monitoring of waste bunkers as well as targeted cooling and/or extinguishing of hotspots.

Easy touchscreen operation enables feeder crane operators to quickly view details thermally, as well as in parallel via video, without requiring time-consuming handling procedures. In practice, this means fast fire prevention.

Crane operators get a clear overview on a monitor. The user interface has a simple design and functions via a touchscreen. Frequently used functions are quickly accessible by simply “tapping”, for example, to go directly to a point, zooming in and switching the image display.

Instantly view any point in the image by tapping for quick, detailed inspection. The video camera’s 14x optical zoom function provides assistance here. Automated security ensures scanning continues.

Infrared thermal imaging can be difficult to interpret. The option to switch between infrared and video image is therefore available to enable better assessment of any fire hazards. Superimposed displays at various intermediate levels (e.g. 50:50) are also possible.

Automatic targeted extinguishing in waste bunkers

A PYROsmart® system is capable of more. While other systems are only able to detect, PYROsmart® can also perform preventive cooling and/or extinguishing of hotspots. Quick cooling of a hotspot is the best form of fire protection.

In the event of an alarm, PYROsmart® waste uses integrated fire-extinguishing software to communicate with and operate fire-extinguishing monitors. Smart extinguishing strategies are calculated based on the exact spatial location of the hotspot and its size. Targeted, automated extinguishing begins within seconds. Extinguishing is dynamically adapted to conditions within the waste bunker (size of the extinguishing window, extinguishing jet setting, etc.). Simultaneous operation of multiple fire-monitor extinguishers is easy and occurs automatically as required using a range of dynamic extinguishing scenarios.

Potential sources of fire are cooled with pinpoint accuracy before fires beak out, or developing fires are extinguished at an early stage. Interruptions to operations, as well as any collateral damage, are also prevented.

Clear visibility in dusty waste bunkers

Infrared radiation has the ability to penetrate dusty and smoky atmospheres. Measuring temperatures using PYROsmart® waste is therefore fully reliable and accurate, even in dusty waste bunkers. This requires continuous cleaning of the optics via compressed air.

A further feature is fire monitor jets remaining visible in a thermal image long after it has become invisible to the naked eye or video image. Only then can developing fires undergo pinpoint extinguishing.

Waste bunker monitoring using video cameras and infrared cameras (thermal imaging cameras).

A developing fire produces smoke: visibility is impaired in the video image (left), but not in the thermal image (right).

The thermal image clearly shows the monitoring area even through smoke and steam.

Extinguishing begins: smoke and steam prevent visibility (video image). Visibility remains good in the thermal image. The cold water jet of the fire monitor also remains clearly visible, enabling targeted extinguishing.

PYROsmart® waste’s interior and sensors undergo continuous cleaning via compressed air. The optics then remain dust-free over years, ensuring reliable waste bunker monitoring even under heavy dust conditions. Correct temperature measurement of the dust-free IR optics is monitored by regular self-test routines using an integrated test source.

Monitoring waste bunkers is a dusty task. The PYROsmart® waste optics are therefore kept dust-free using compressed-air cleaning.

Compressed-air cleaning keeps the PYROsmart® waste optics free of dust and ensures clear visibility.

Infrared cameras and video imaging – a powerful combination!

The PYROsmart® infrared camera is equipped with autofocus making it ideal for viewing objects with varying heights or distances. Surfaces of materials then remain in focus, even when bunker loads vary, enabling precision measurement of surface temperatures.

Temperature monitoring is then much more accurate than with standard fixed-focus equipment, meaning much earlier alarm triggering. Hotspots in fixed-focus vision blur into the surrounding areas and are then recorded as less hot.

A high-resolution video camera complements the infrared camera. This provides numerous advantages:

  • Switching between infrared and video images is possible on the monitoring display enabling better assessment of fire hazards.
  • Superimposing infrared and video images is possible at many intermediate levels. This improves visual assessment and enables easier classification.
  • An optical zoom function allows detailed viewing of even distant objects.
  • Detailed evaluation facilitates manual intervention via crane grippers as well as manual extinguishing via a joystick.

Completely different, but powerful when combined! A direct comparison of infrared thermal and video imaging clearly reveals the differences:
